Centropa is an oral history project that combines old family pictures from the 19th and 20th centuries with the stories that go with them. Centropa presents interviews with Jews living in Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, and the Sephardic communities of Greece, Turkey and the Balkans.
The searchable database of Centropa includes 25.000 digitized images, representing Jewish life and alows visitors to look up family names, places and even search through the photographs by category.
Centropa is not only a Holocaust project, although the Holocaust inevitably figures large in every account.
The film area includes more than 20 short films, based on interviews and family pictures collected by Ed Serrota and his team. the biographical films are available as podcasts and on Youtube. Most films ar in English or has english subtitle. Some are available in German. Here is an example of a sephardic family.
