Shortly before the liberation of the Neuengamme concentration camp, it became an assembly camp for Danish and Norwegian prisoners from German concentration camps and prisons. The Vice-President of the Swedish Red Cross, Count Folke Bernadotte, had negotiated that this group could be transferred to their countries of origin via Sweden by the Red Cross.
The international conference Scandinavia during the Nazi period and the 'Operation Bernadotte'. Events and Memory organised by the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial aims to examine this extraordinary event through presenting new research findings and talks with eyewitnesses. Against the backdrop of the German occupation
of the Scandinavian countries during WWII, we want to focus on the fate of the Scandinavians who were deported to German concentration camps. We will look more closely at the situation of Danes and Norwegians imprisoned in the Neuengamme concentration camp.
On the second day, we will focus on the transfer of the Scandinavian prisoners to Neuengamme and their return on the Red Cross's White
Buses as well as the perception of the period of German occupation and the White Buses rescue operation in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, but we will also examine the problematic aspects of the rescue operation.
