During World War II, the National Socialist regime deployed and exploited millions of forced labourers in the German Reich, the Axis nations and countries under German military occupation. The aim of the international conference is to present the results of current research into the deployment of forced labourers in Hitler’s Europe, a subject that has been largely neglected to date.
The conference will in particular identify and attempt to close the knowledge gaps on the subject of forced labour in regions outside the German Reich, as well as exploring the conditions experienced by former forced labourers after 1945. Speakers from Germany and other countries will focus on the various manifestations of forced labour in individual states during World War II. Taking a differentiated approach, the conference aims to look at forced labour under National Socialism as a transnational experience in European history.
The conference is divided into two thematic forums: "Forced labour in occupied Europe" and "Memories of forced labour after 1945".
